Meaning & History
Strictly masculine diminutive of ROBIN (as -et is a French masculine diminutive suffix), which itself is a diminutive of ROBERT. This given name is no longer in use in France: it fell out of use after the Middle Ages, which was probably due to the growing association of the name with a faucet. In this day and age, robinet is now synonymous with a faucet and has thus become an everyday word in France. However, the given name still survives as a patronymic surname in the country, and it is a fairly common one there at that.A known bearer of this given name was the medieval French illuminator and painter Robinet Testard (active in his work from 1470 to 1531 or 1533; his birthdate and date of death are unknown).
