Meaning & History
The first element of this name is derived from the Lithuanian noun žygis meaning "march" as well as "hike, trip", which is ultimately derived from the Lithuanian verb žygiuoti meaning "to march, to parade" as well as "to hike". The second element is either derived from Lithuanian mantus meaning "intelligent" (see DAUMANTAS) or from Lithuanian manta meaning "property, estate" as well as "wealth, riches, fortune".With that said, this Lithuanian name has sometimes been anglicized and/or germanized as SIGISMUND. Vice versa, that Germanic name (as well as its Polish form ZYGMUNT) has sometimes been lithuanized as Žygimantas, even though SIGISMUNDAS is the main Lithuanian form of Sigismund. In addition to all of this, SIGMUND (which is a younger version of Sigismund) has almost always been lithuanized to ZIGMANTAS, thus making Zigmantas the main Lithuanian form of Sigmund. As a result, the Lithuanian name Žygimantas is often confused with Zigmantas (and all other similar-looking Lithuanian forms of Sigmund and Sigismund).
