Meaning & History

Means "heather" in Spanish, taken from the title of the Virgin Mary Nuestra Señora del Brezo meaning "Our Lady of the Heather". She is venerated in the Spanish province of Palencia.

According to folk legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to two shepherds and entrusted them with the mission of finding a carving of the Virgin located in the mountains of Liébana, a nearby city. When the shepherds arrived at the place, they found a ruined hermitage, and a new apparition revealed to them that this was the place where a sanctuary should be built.
