Meaning & History
Apparently derived from the Latin term Lares referring to minor guardian gods, the origin of which is unknown. There may be a connection to Latin larva "ghost, spectre" or larvo "to enchant, bewitch". (Also compare LARUNDA, LARA (2).) In Roman mythology, Acca Larentia was the name of the human foster-mother of the twins Romulus and Remus.
