Meaning & History
This name was borne by Pierre Victurnien Vergniaud (31 May 1753 – 31 October 1793), a lawyer and statesman, and a significant figure of the French Revolution.10th-century records mention a certain Saint Victurnien, a 5th-century anchorite, who left his name in the name of the village Saint-Victurnien in southern France.
The origin and meaning of his name are uncertain; one theory however links his name to VICTORINUS, which becomes Vartunio in the patois of the langue d'Oc and Vertunian in Occitan. This leads some scholars to theorize that the three forms might have "blended" into one and, with Standard French added to the mix, formed the name Victurnien.
