Meaning & History

Roman praenomen (which later also came to be used as a nomen gentile) of Oscan origin. The meaning is uncertain, but it may possibly have been derived from Oscan staít meaning "he stands", which would mean that it is closely related to Latin statuo "to set up, to erect, to cause to stand". Oscan and Latin are both Italic languages, hence the close relation. Also compare the English word statue. A known bearer of this name was the Roman comic poet Caecilius Statius, who lived in the 2nd century BC.
