From Old Median vispafryā meaning "(she who is) dear to all"; the spelling was likely altered due to an early manuscript error, possibly with influence from Persian فرنگ (farang) meaning "European". In the epic the Shahnameh Farangis is the eldest daughter of king Afrasiab as well as a wife of the prince Siavash.
