Meaning & History

Derived from Attic Greek λεώς (leos) meaning "the people" (see laos) and Greek σθενος (sthenos) meaning "vigour, strength". Alternatively, the first element could be λεων (leon) meaning "lion". This name was borne by an Athenian general (4th century BC) and an Athenian admiral (4th century BC).
