Meaning & History

Derived from the Greek adjective ἄγλαυρος (aglauros), a variant of ἀγλαός (aglaos) meaning "bright, shining, splendid". In Greek mythology Aglauros was the eldest daughter of the Athenian king Cecrops. According to Harper's Dictionary of Classical Antiquities (1898): 'The names of (the goddess Athena's) earliest priestesses, the daughters of Cecrops—Aglaurus, Pandrosus, and Herse—signify the bright air, the dew, and the rain, and are mere personifications of their qualities, of such value to the Athenian territory.'
