Meaning & History
Latinized form of Greek Ἀγαθοδαίμων (Agathodaimon) meaning "noble spirit", from ἀγαθὸς (agathos) "good, noble" and δαίμων (daimon) "spirit".In Greek mythology he was the daemon, or presiding spirit, of the vineyards and grain fields, and a personal companion spirit, ensuring good luck, health, and wisdom. In Ptolemaic Egypt he was associated with the Egyptian god of fate SHAI. He was depicted as a serpent or as a young man holding a cornucopia and a bowl in one hand and a poppy and an ear of grain in the other. The agathodaemon was later adapted into a general daemon of FORTUNA, particularly of the continued abundance of a family's good food and drink. Pausanias conjectured that the name was a mere epithet of Zeus.
