Meaning & History

Derived from Ūla, which is the name of a river in Dzūkija National Park (located near the villages of Marcinkonys and Merkinė) in southern Lithuania. In turn, the river derives its name from the Baltic root aul-, which comes from Proto-Indo-European *aulo-s or *h₂eulos meaning "tube, pipe". There might also be a relation with Proto-Indo-European *av- meaning "source (of water), spring" as well as "current, flow".
