According to legend, Blondel was a troubadour who rescued the English king Richard the Lionheart, who had been captured while returning from the Crusades and was being held for ransom. The story goes that Blondel traveled Europe looking for Richard by playing the first verse of a song only they knew. When he heard Richard playing the second verse, he knew he had found him.The name Blondel refers to someone with blond hair. The troubadour's real name was Jean de Nesle; he was nicknamed Blondel because of his blond hair.
