Meaning & History
The meaning and origin of this name are uncertain, though the name looks like it may possibly be of Persian origin. In that case, it may be related to Garsivaz. I have also come across a source that claims that the name means "stony black monastery" in Old Armenian, derived from the Old Armenian elements քար (k'ar) "stone, rock" combined with սեւ (sev) "black" and վան (van) "monastery" (also see my comment for Sevan). This seems unlikely, but I wanted to mention it anyway (just in case).A notable bearer of this name was Garsevan Chavchavadze (1757-1811), a Georgian prince who was also a politician and a diplomat.
