Meaning & History
From Ran combined with the suffix 丸 (maru) meaning "circle, round," used before the Meiji Period (1868-1912) as a suffix denoting affection (along with -maro (麿/麻呂)) and was given to boys of upper class until they came of age, usually at ages 13 to 17.One bearer of this name was Sengoku period military commander Mori Ranmaru (森 蘭丸), also known as Mori Naritoshi (森 成利) (1565–1582). From an early age, he was an attendant to powerful daimyō Oda Nobunaga (織田 信長) (1534–1582) and Ranmaru was well-known for his devotion, loyalty, and bravery, culminating in his seppuku upon Nobunaga's death. This name is rarely used.
