Meaning & History

Derived from Greek διαγορεύω (diagoreuo) meaning "to speak plainly, to declare", itself composed of διά (dia) "across, through" and ἀγορεύω (agoreuo) "to say, orate, speak publicly". Alternatively, it could derive from Διος (Dios) meaning "of Zeus" (or δῖος (dios) "divine") and either the above element ἀγορεύω (agoreuo) or ἀγορά (agora) meaning "assembly, marketplace". A bearer of this name was Diagoras of Melos, a Greek poet from the 5th century BC.
