Meaning & History

Medieval German diminutive of MARGARETHE, via the variant Mergelin.
It has been recorded several times throughout the 13th and 14th century, among others in 1355 in the area around Cologne. It seems to have been popular in the 1300s in what is today Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
