Meaning & History

Originally a Late Roman cognomen, which was derived from the latinized Greek name NYMPHIDIUS. In turn, the Greeks translated this cognomen back into Greek as #Nymphidianos# (Νυμφιδιανός). A bearer of this name was Nymphidianus of Smyrna, a Graeco-Roman philosopher from the 4th century AD who was also the brother of fellow philosopher Maximus of Ephesus.
