Meaning & History
Possibly of Germanic origin. This was the name of a 4th-century Gallo-Roman saint praised by Gregory of Tours. Also known as Illidius, he was a bishop of Clermont in Auvergne, France, which he worked to establish as a center of religious teaching and devotion. According to tradition he died after returning from Trier, where he cured a daughter of Magnus Maximus of demonic possession.
