Derived from the Greek verb πείθω (peitho) meaning "to persuade, to convince" as well as "to obey, to yield to" and "to believe, to trust (in)".In Greek mythology, this was the name of the daimon (spirit) of persuasion, seduction and charming speech. In a more forceful incarnation, she could also symbolize forced inducement, rape and bridal abduction. She was a companion of APHRODITE and her symbols were a white dove and a ball of binding twine.
