The meaning and origin of the first element in this Germanic name is rather uncertain, and so there are various possibilities to the name's meaning. The most likely possibility is that the first element comes from Old High German #turs# (compare Old Norse #Þurs#) "giant." An other possibility is that the first element refers to the Thuringii, a Germanic tribe. The etymology of their name is uncertain. The second element in the name comes from Gothic #môds# (#mut# in New High German) "mind, spirit" - but it might also be a blend of Old High German #mund# "protection" (see SIGMUND) with #môds#.
