From the Old Slavic name *Voldiměrŭ, derived from the elements volděti meaning "to rule" and měrŭ meaning "great, famous". The second element has also been associated with mirŭ meaning "peace, world".

In Latin this name originally referred to the morning star, Venus, but later became associated with the chief angel who rebelled against God's rule in heaven (see Isaiah 14:12). Originally spelled Jor-L, the name was reused (or the character was repurposed) for that of Superman's father in 1939. The spelling was changed to Jor-el and then Jor-El in the 1940s. His son Superman's birth name is Kal-El.
