Meaning & History
Greek form of the Old Persian name *Artavazda meaning "persevering through truth" [1], a calque of Avestan 𐬀𐬴𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬰𐬛𐬀𐬵 (Ashauuazdah). This was the name of two Achaemenid Persian satraps of Hellespontine Phrygia.
