Okay, since nobody has anything nice to say about Walt, I felt compelled to add my two cents! I think that Walt is a very cute nickname, and Walter makes a very distinguished first name (for me, Walter falls in the same class as Charles, Edward, George and Henry). Walt is very casual and down to earth and fun. Perfect for a child, or the adult who doesn't want something so formal.
And for the record, everybody else seems to think of Walt Disney first, but Walt Whitman and Sir Walter Scott came to mind before Mr. Disney even entered it.

I like Walter, but not this nickname. It makes me think of Walt Disney and all the urban legends surrounding him.

Immediately brings Walt Disney and nothing else to mind. Not good.

It's really ugly and unless you're a four-foot white-haired old man with a hearing aid, who remembers when television was invented, this name doesn't suit you.
