My name is Vivian and I love it. It is not a common name and I also get people telling me it is such a lovely name. I think having an old school name amazing, it helps you stand out.
Vivian is a lovely name, sweet and pretty. I really want to name my little girl Vivian in the future for its uniqueness, there probably won’t be many Vivian’s around and I don’t know of anybody with this name currently. It could suit any age and is a perfect girl's name. I’m not really a fan of it as a boy's name, but that could possibly just be because I’ve always known and thought of it as a girl's name. I also do really like Vivienne as this is more feminine and will probably be what I choose for my daughter if I ever have one and go with this name.
My mom's name. I find this name soooo beautiful, unique, luxe, and sophisticated. I love all of its variants and plan on naming my kid this (either gender).I work with kids and this name has had a revival- it's super weird calling a 3 year old "Vivian"... but they'll grow into it. Lol.

Perhaps it's because I am an old lady and Welsh however my only experience of Vivian is with older men. Vivienne with ladies. 'Vivian Grey' was an 1860's novel written by Benjamin Disraeli who was a fellow of Jewish ancestry who became prime minister of Britain many years ago. Anyway, the novel 'Vivian Grey' is a story of a young man trying to conquer the world of politics. Not quite my thing but just goes to show how the spelling Vivian has been associated with boys in England at least for quite a while. With that said times do change and people use all kinds of funny names now. I asked my granddaughter if she thinks Vivian is a girl's or boy's name and she said girl of course so there you go. To me it's a solid boys name! Swings and roundabouts.

I like this spelling of this name the best. I find it a mix of formal and fun! Plus, the nickname Viv is amazing. Not to mention, the cool meaning?
I want to like this name but I just can’t. It’s very harsh/mean sounding to me and dated IMO. I also know of several little Vivians now which always surprises me.
I think this name is awesome! Really beautiful, but still kind of strong with the V in it. I like Viviene too, but I still like Vivian. Kind of in the same lane as Valarie, which I also love!
Being a Vivian I personally would never name a child this even if it wasn’t my name… nicknames like Vivi and Viv are cute but NOT VIVIA, VIAN OR VIA! Also my middle name Rose, goes well with my name. I like it but it’s not the best… my parents love very interesting and unique names. My sister's name is Lux. If you are naming your child this NEVER AND I MEAN NEVER CALL THEM VIVIA!
I can't imagine this name on anyone under 40. It's just as dated as Louise.

I actually love this name for a boy or a girl, however, some things are best left aside for others. All existence for a son called Vivian would be unsatisfactory at the very least. I do think that Vivian as a female name is very nice, but only suits a certain type in my mind, such as Vivien Leigh (a beautiful, extroverted, very dramatic girl with dark hair and eyes), and so I've decided to reserve this name for future characters. Oh well.

I love the name Vivian but prefer the Vivienne spelling, it’s softer and more friendly in my opinion. Such a classic, beautiful name!

Very pretty, just like Zoe and Eva, but I prefer Viviana more.
I used to be somewhat proud of my name but after seeing quite a few negative comments about it, not so much... I’m a girl who is much younger than 60. Although I believe that this is a beautiful name, I’ve seen so many comments saying it was disgusting, better for a male, and more feminine as Viviene.
This name is not so popular, actually, quite uncommon, however, many people like it, so it can gain in popularity. Vivian is a good name, not of my favorites, but I like it!
I've changed my mind from my previous comment on 9/28/2019. I have decided I'm going use this as a first name! That is unless my brothers have a girl and name her Vivian after my grandmother before I can. It's not a competition, and I would be just as happy to use it as a middle name to honor the most amazing woman I have ever met. Who has always been there for me, and my first best friend. Alzheimer's is a horrible disease. She is currently at stage 6, and has been for a year. I'm so glad she lives with me and my family and that we can take care of her. This is a site where I feel I can be myself.
I love this name sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much. On a girl, though. It seems more feminine. I might go with Vivienna, and have a nickname be Vivian.
My mom really likes this name and when she first mentioned it I thought it was a boy name. I prefer it on a boy.

Vivian seems like a feminine name that I can find acceptable for a male, but I personally prefer it as a girl’s name. I’ll put it as a unisex name in my book, but I think it’s more feminine. It’s a very beautiful elegant name. It will age well, mostly on girls! Viviana might be the feminine form, but Vivian sounds feminine too. I don’t think this name is very dated, it will age well!

Though it was historically unisex, it will be on male and female sections of my book. That said, I like it as a girl’s name.

Vivian is a classy and elegant name. I think it’s better for a girl. You would only name your son Vivian to be unique to show people who name their daughters Michael and Hunter that vice versa should be included. This name is equivalent to Evelyn. I don’t care for it on a boy though! Way too feminine. It’s a cute girl’s name though.

I've often heard this as a man's name when spelled with an e. This spelling with the a is feminine. But either way the name in the U.S. is strictly used for women. Never heard a man called Vivian in the last 50 years and I've lived all over the U.S. I believe it is common for men in France but spelled differently. I've known a couple older women with this name and spelling. I like the name.

Vivian is a lovely name with old-fashioned flair. I can imagine triplets called Vivian, Zoe, and Eva, since all of these names mean life.
My chosen name! Obviously I love it, the meaning is awesome and the sound is pretty. I can see both a boy and girl having this name as well. :D.

Vivian sounds pretty masculine, I think it would be more refreshing seeing boys named Vivian now, it sounds like Julian a bit, which I see as a masculine name. I recommend Viviana because it gives it a more exotic pronunciation than plain old Vivian for a girl. I don’t really like Vivienne because it looks like too many letters and sounds a bit snobby for me.
I love the name Vivian! Personally I think it’s a girls name rather than a boys name. Though I do like the name Vivi-Anne a little bit better, I don't know why.
I know a person with this name who is Egyptian and female. I think it's nice, but I prefer Vivienne or Bebinn. I think Vivienne looks much more feminine and complete. I also think it sounds lighter and more youthful.

This is the best name I have ever heard. If anyone doesn't like it, it's because they are jealous of this amazing name.

This is the best name ever- any child would be privileged to have this amazing name. It's truly wonderful and anyone who doesn't have it should be ashamed. Also it's feminine.

Becoming too popular! Sad to see such a unique name dismissed into the future categories of trendy names along with Kaelinn and Maddysin.

Ugh, I can't believe people are saying this is bad because it's a more masculine name! This is my name, and I like that it's not too sugary sweet feminine. It is a strong, dignified name. Rhyming with "oblivion" is also nice.

It's rather odd to see various comments on this name saying cute diminutives and so forth, but I'd just like to express that I know people with this name who think it's fine on its own. Also, I would like to say that this sounds like a sophisticated female name. It is a stronger name in my opinion than the feminine versions "Viviana" "Vivienne" and "Viviane". I completely and wholeheartedly disagree with the people who say it's too manly. Females can have manly names. To those people giving out "advice" not to name their progeny Vivian, people can make their own decisions!

In my mind Vivian is masculine. This is because it seems incomplete on a girl. Viviana and Vivienne are much more feminine.Vivian instead has the same vibe of Victor, Dorian and Florian.
I think my great grandparents had a daughter named Vivian who eventually changed her name to Vivien as in England she was told Vivian was more a man's name, or at least ambiguous enough in the 40's to make her prefer Vivien. My aunt was named Kristin on her birth certificate in 1968 when it was not as popular as it is today, but she changed it to Kristen with an "e" to be more feminine. I wonder what men today think of the name? I know viv's. V-vivi, viv, vivling, vivcat, all kinds of pet names for this name.
I know that historically, this was an English male spelling of the name (along with Vyvyan, which is just trying to be difficult)... but I'm sorry, I don't perceive anything masculine about the sounds. It's an elegant, sophisticated feminine name. And also the real name of Vivien Leigh (she was born Vivian Mary Hartley).I go back and forth between Vivian and Vivienne, often unable to decide which spelling I like more. Right now I'm thinking Vivienne is too... princess-y, so Vivian it is! Lol.
While I respect its history as a male name, it sounds far too feminine to my ears to ever be used on a male in this day and age. It sounds soft and sweet, though I slightly prefer Viviana or Vivienne on a female. It's a nice name, and I can see it on a female of any age. It's not my favorite, but I like it.
As an Asian, I was given the nickname of Vivian when I was just a kid (and I'm 18 now and my parents still call me that sometimes). At first I really love this name because it sounds kinda like a unisex name (I'm a tomboy), but I have come to hate it because it is too common among Asians. I already have a common name and I don't want my nickname/English name to be common. And Vivian is mostly used on females here.

Very pretty name! Vivian and Vivienne are both gorgeous! Viv and Vivi are super cute nicknames.

I wish people would use the Vivienne spelling more for girls than this. It looks way more feminine. Giving this spelling is like naming your daughter Julian or Adrian, think about it.

Both my sister and mother's names are Vivian. My mother's name is Vivian Ivette and my sister's is Vivian Yamill. I think the name is Vivian is a dying name, one that is dwindling in people naming their kids that. Nevertheless, this name is underrated and is strong, elegant, sophisticated, and beautiful. I would name my daughter Vivian, but that's just one too many Vivians in the house.
Beautiful name, but I don't understand how this is considered at all to be unisex... I see it as a girl's name only... But anyway, I find this name to be, as I said, beautiful! I love the thought of shortening it to Viv as a nickname.

The name Vivian is handsome and sexy for a guy and beautiful and gorgeous for a girl. This name is perfect for both genders! =D The name Vivian is classy, sophisticated, smart-sounding, respectable and elegant. ;-)

One of my best friends named her daughter Vivian, I think it's pretty.
You all are very rude I am completely offended by all of you! Vivian is a unique and beautiful name it is NOT ugly! You are all just rude and of utmost bitterness!
I love this name. It's got such a unique sound to it. It's elegant, old fashioned, and strong. Vivian can fit both tomboys and girly girls without sounding out of place. It's starting to get popular though, but I don't think it's to the point where you'd have to worry that your Vivian wouldn't be the only Vivian in her class. The nicknames Viv and Vivi are absolutely adorable, too :) you really can't go wrong with a name like this and if you're looking for an old fashioned name that hasn't gone trendy like Charlotte and Amelia but isn't 'old lady-ish' like Ethel and Mildred, Vivian is the way to go! Although I have a feeling its going to rise even higher in popularity so use it while you can!
I love that this name means "alive". If I had a child who almost died at birth, I'd name him Vivian. Probably as a middle name though, since people seem to think it's only a female name. I reckon it looks better on boys though.

I know 2 people my age named Vivian, so I think it's making a comeback! I hadn't really thought about this name until I met the first Vivian, and I realized how beautiful of a name it is! Viv and Vivi are adorable nicknames :)

Vivian is a lovely name, and I would seriously consider giving it to my daughter, if I ever had one... but you probably shouldn't name a boy this. It's so pretty and feminine. "Adrian" is a similar masculine name you could use, but not Vivian.

I love the name Vivian for either a boy or a girl, and prefer this spelling for both, as Vivienne looks crowded. I wish people weren't so hung up on gender expectations, so what if a boy has a soft, whispery name, it's beautiful. Men can be beautiful too. :)
Vivian is one of my favorite names. It's so elegant and feminine, and oozes 1920's charm. That's the first thing I think of when I hear it. Vivienne is also a very pretty alternate spelling, but I prefer the original (Vivian).I don't think it fits at all for a boy, though. There's nothing about this name that is handsome and masculine at all.
Vivian is a strong yet delicate, sensitive, sweet and feminine name. I think it has far too much femininity to be used on a male, especially since I ALWAYS think of Vivian Vance first and foremost when I hear this name. Vivian Vance was often referred to as 'Viv,' which is very cute. I like to call her Vivie, though. No one else ever called her that, so it's my special name for her. And it sounds so, SO sweet! This is quite possibly the most beautiful name I have ever heard and if I ever have a daughter, I am certain to name her Vivian Roberta.
Vivian is such a beautiful name on a female, but I think it isn't that pretty on a male.

This name sounds feminine to me... as in, usable on a girl. I just can't get past the fact that the form of this name is technically male. The feminine form would be Viviana or Vivienne.
I love this name. I don't like when people say it should be a masculine name only. Vivian is unimaginable on males nowadays. Still, it sounds very pretty on a girl.
My little sister's name is Vivian. She is the only one I have ever met. I love her name. It's so sweet on a little girl, but it sounds like a professional name, too. :)
I love this name. It's so tender and sweet, perfect for a name for a little girl. It's good for all ages, too. :)

To me, this name is absolutely and totally feminine, and I cannot imagine it on males. I watched the hilarious Young Ones back in the summer of 2001, and quite frankly, I didn't think Vyvyan was the real name of the character. I thought he had used a feminine name to be unconventional and to piss people off, and spelled it wrong to be even more unconventional and to piss people off a bit more. I guess I was wrong. I don't really like the name much, as it's got two 'v's coming so soon after one another, and the name sounds so elitist and snobby somehow. That would also have been another annoyance factor for people in Vyvyan's name in the Young Ones, but if the name was common on males, well, that sort of ruins at least some of the idea.
This name sounds very harsh and mean on an adult, and bratty and spoiled on a kid. I hope I don't offend anyone with this name, but this is one of the many V names I don't like.
I love Vivian but for a boy quite unfortunately. If I have any children in the future I'm certain (from now anyhow) to use it. Still, I enjoy the name.
Heh. It's kinda weird going online and seeing so many comments on my name, but whatever. Personally, if I could, I would change my name. I hate my name.
I really like the name Vivian for a boy, however it's considered to be quite feminine so I would probably only use this as a middle name. In France, the name Vivien is used for boys.

What a handsome name for a boy! I love it. A semi-famous male bearer of this name (although with a different spelling) is Vyvyan Wilde/Holland, Oscar Wilde's second and youngest child.
