Since Velasco directs here, I'll write it here.
While Velasco has been associated with the Basque bele "crow", the Royal Academy of the Basque Language (Euskaltzaindia) states it is derived from the Visigothic name Vela and the Basque suffix -sco/sko, which was used to form patronymic names (cf. The surnames Vélaz and Vélez).

In Bulgaria "Vasco" is used as a pet form of "Vasil" ("s" is pronounced [s], not [z], the stress is on the "i").

Maybe this name got also another history, probably in France, and from the region of GUASCOGNA. For this it was maybe Guasco, Guascone and means a guy full of himself.
