Tendai is a Shona name (c70:30 Male:Famale) but of the wider Bantu (ie African people from East Africa & Middle East (Afro-Semitic) who met up and intermarried with those that came through Central Africa!) with a double meaning: “Be Grateful to” or “Trust in” El (God)! Ie it has a sense of only those Trust in God are the ones that Give Glory (Thanks, Honour, Blessing) to God! Or the most obvious & common: We show Gratitude (Blessing, Honour, Thanks) to God because we have put our Trust in Him (He has delivered us to Victory already)! Ie it’s a Biblical name of tremendous relevance...(before God had revealed His Name to Moshe as YWHW when we all knew Him as El)...
Ten=has the same meaning in Hebrew/Aramaic = Teshuvah = Turn hence Tenda = Trust = Believe...(wow: my friends would jokingly call me Tens (Tenzi)...Tindo (a cool & beloved way to say “our trusted one” or “our trusted master-friend”)
“‘nda’ (funny, now I remember my parents would affectionately call me ‘ndai sometimes using the second half of my name!) is the root of = “vonga”, = literary bring your two hands together in giving thanks...a cultural humble and contrite from the heart way of since gratitude! Funny to notice that bringing our hands together has so much good meaning...look at praise, pray, acclaim... together, open hands, handshake, surrender etc... (‘nda also means “it is” “it is so”, “it is what it is”, Kefa, it’s a rock, it’s a word that cannot be moved! Like when an elder say something and you try change them with persuasiveness they can say “nda!” meaning case closed, “finish & klaar”, Complete! Done! )
Thus Tendai reflects the hidden meaning and character of One God: of Grace and Truth! Gratitude and Trust! Blessings and Honour! Glory and Power! Father and Son! YWHW! Who gives the Spirit to Redeem His Own back to Him so they can be One with Him like He is One! Bless you! Anyway hope it helps! It’s what God our Lord and Father has revealed to me about my name over time! But the revelations is forever new - tomorrow I learn more!
