Tecumseh is an ancient native name. My uncle, a chief, had this name. I agree with the Shawnee meaning (panther slides across) and want to add to the Pamunkey it means ‘comes around again’, in that every generation has a great leader who is built on past leaders and since time isn’t linear the many leaders are like one great panther sliding across time. This is my son’s middle name, even though many told me not to use a native name. I’m honestly surprised how much he likes it and his peers envy it. A nice sister name is Matoaka, means beautiful flower, and it was Pocahontas’ real name.
