Meaning & History
Name of the title character in Henry Williamson's novel 'Tarka the Otter' (1927) and the subsequent movie adaptation (1979). In the book the (male) character's name is said to mean "wandering as water"; perhaps the author based it on Welsh dwrgi "otter", literally "water dog", or on its Cornish cognate dowrgi. This is occasionally used as a masculine and feminine given name, and was most notably borne by Tarka Cordell (1966-2008), a British musician, writer, record producer, and sometime model. This also coincides with a Sanskrit word meaning "reasoning, logic".
