The regular use of Sunday as a woman's name in the USA goes back to the radio soap opera "Our Gal Sunday" which was aired between 1937 and 1959. This in turn was based on a stage play titled "Sunday" that Ethel Barrymore starred in on Broadway back in 1904. The character Sunday had been left on a doorstep as an infant in a Colorado mining camp and was named after the day of the week on which she was found. Orphaned Sunday grows up to marry an English lord in the story.
