Stanislav Petrov (1939-2017), "the man who saved the world", was a lieutenant colonel in the Soviet Air Defense Forces. He was monitoring the Oko nuclear early-warning system when it malfunctioned on September 26, 1983. He correctly judged the report of an incoming U.S. missile to be a false alarm, and his decision not to launch a retaliatory strike, against orders, is credited with preventing a nuclear war.
