Can't really decide how much I like this as a girl's/woman's name...it definitely bespeaks someone who loves the outdoors, mountains, lakes...suited to a character whose persona is "nature-lover..."
This is my name and I never felt like it suited me but it's not a bad one. The fun thing to do is when I'm introducing myself in Spanish I say "Soy Sierra, como cierra la boca" (cierra la boca means shut your mouth or shut up) and it gets laughs every time.
I like it, it reminds me of mangoes and the colors green and blue and listening to calming music and the names Sierra, Savannah and Serena give off the calm peaceful nature vibes, the only thing I don't like about the name Sierra it that Total Drama Island character Sierra who is a nasty creepy stalker but aside from that I still think Sierra is a great and beautiful name.
I've never met a person named Sierra who actually fits the name.

This is my name. I don't really like it because it doesn't fit me, but I think it's a beautiful name because of its meanings. Really wish people would quit making jokes about the soda though (Sierra Mist) because it's not funny when everyone you know has made this joke about your name since you first learned it.

It’s pretty. It literally makes me think of a mountain. Sierra makes Ciara look somewhat ugly when you put it next to each other.
I like this spelling way more than the Ciara spelling because it's prettier and you don't have to worry about people mispronouncing your name. Ciara has a few different pronunciations.
My name is Sierra and I love my name. I was born on October 26, 2005 at 10:26. If your name is Sierra, be proud of your name and you are beautiful. I have lost my mother and it is hard without her but I have my dad, Juli (dad's girlfriend), my brother, and my little sister and I am happy that they are my family. Be proud of your name.
I think "Sierra" is a very BEAUTIFUL name because I am named after my grandma.

I named my youngest daughter Sierra without any research being done. My reason was because I grew up in Sacramento and everything that was green and pretty attracted me as a young child. And yes every street, school and function had Sierra as a name. So I loved the opportunity to name my daughter Sierra and remember the few things that were beautiful to me. I love you Sierra Elena.
It's weird, I think this spelling is prettier than the Ciara spelling. But I would still spell it Ciara. I think it's because most of the girls I met spelled it like Ciara.

My best friend's name is that but it is spelled Siarah. Which is much prettier. I think Sierra or Cierra are not as pretty as Siarah, so Sierra, its meh but Siarah, I think that is beautiful, the pronunciation is also beautiful.

My name is Sierra. And I love my beautiful, fabulous name. Anyways, I just love my name because I think it is beautiful.

I like its meaning. Nature-names are my favourite theme together with Mythology. But... I strongly dislike the sound! It seems cruel and rough, maybe it is because of the "rr" sound or because in Italian it is similar to "siero" (serum) that reminds me of syringes (I'm afraid with them also when I do vaccines and blood samples).
I honestly don't like the name. I always associate it with this girl named Sierra Worthington. She had stringy brown hair and had terrible personal hygiene. Her breath was simply awful and she wouldn't leave me ALONE. I always had to be her partner for projects, and I ALWAYS ended up doing all the work. I'm sure not all people that are named Sierra are like this, but that's my personal impression of the name.
I really like this name. It is soft and lovely, and sounds really nice paired with "Rain", as some previous comments have mentioned. The fact that it's the name of the mountain range adds to its beauty for me, because our family used to go on camping trips in the Sierras and I have many fond and lovely memories of them.

In my experience, the individual bearer gives meaning to the name (and this is true for every name). It seems a lot of people's impressions of names are influenced by the people they meet (with the name in question, or one similar). What I'm saying is, if you're on this website looking for baby names, don't just choose something because it is or isn't popular, or because a few people got a bad impression of it. The name means something different to you. And there will always be someone who hates the name. As for my personal opinion, I have noticed that Sierra is neither common nor uncommon- I've heard of a few, and met one. I think it's kind of cute, and it could definitely age with a girl. But it sounds more like a middle name to me. Never got the 'trashy' impression from this one.

Very pretty! Never would have thought of using this name before but I like it. It's similar to Sarah but a bit different, not in a bad way either!

To me, it is a pretty name with a lovely meaning. Yes, it is a modern name, which does not automatically make it "bad" (or "good") It suggests mountains... What could be more beautiful than that? I would definitely consider naming my own daughter Sierra.
My name is Sierra Rain, meaning mountain rain, I love my name. When I was born, this name wasn't even in the baby books. My mother named me after the mountain range. I am proud of it! I am a very strong, kind, sweet, amazing person that everyone loves to death! So please, don't bag on this name, it truly means true beauty and strength, just like the mountains. Please keep my name and all the other Sierras out there a beautiful name!
Well, my name is Sierra. I love the name, but can never find it on anything that has names on it! Lol. But either way, it's an amazing name.. #biased_a_little.
I think this name is gorgeous. It's something a little different and makes me think of a beautiful, strong girl. It is modern but at the same time classy. I hope to give my first daughter this name if I still love it as much when the time comes.
I really like this name, and not because it's my name, but because of the meaning, and the sound/look. I am very proud to be a Sierra because it reminds me of nature, and it is a pretty name. Sierra is really elegant and pretty uncommon. I have only known a few Sierras in my life. If my name was not Sierra, I would defiantly name my child that. I never have been made fun of, so if you want to name your child Sierra but don't want your child to be made fun of, I would choose it. Really pretty middle names for Sierra are Sierra Elizabeth (my name), and I also like Sierra Rose. Sierra is my favorite name!
I understand that all of you have your opinions, but I would like to state that, since some people seem to find Sierra's stupid, my name is Sierra and I am two grades ahead in math.

I have a Sierra and she is fair, and mild natured, very funny and feminine. She is a lover of art and theater and literature. It's a beautiful name and she seems to have a mountain range of interests and a deep love of nature and things of God.

It is a pretty name, but I just don't like it, I don't know why. It doesn't give me a good feeling and it doesn't seem like a real name to me. Don't get me wrong, it is pretty.

This name is rare to hear in England (where I am from). I think it is a lovely name and it sounds very pretty and unique. I also think it will age very well on a woman. Love it!
I genuinely do love this name; it's so pretty. Even if it is after a mountain range, for some reason it reminds me of jewels. However, my friend has a spoiled cousin with this name, and that is the only down-side of this lovely, stunning name in my opinion.
The first thought that enters into the abyss of my mind, is that of the United States lemon-lime soft drink "Sierra Mist," by PepsiCo. (Outside of the country, you may know it as 7-Up-- which we also have.)Having said that... posters above: you are not in the right to dictate what people say of 'your' name. A large purpose for BehindTheName's existence is to share personal opinions-- to give insight to potential parents regarding what their son or daughter may face. Each one of us is in possession of a name, and each one of us have read both splendid and less-than-amusing comments; that is how it goes; either build a mental resistance or give a wide berth.Personally, I despise the name "Sierra." I merely feel that it is very default, very generic... it greatly lacks professional qualities, as well as being pretentious-, pompous-, uneducated-, and infantile-sounding. It is terribly pageant-baby-- certainly not the definition of brains. The manic accumulation of spelling-variants cannot save "Sierra," for it is neither attractive to the eye or to the ear.
I find Sierra a gorgeous name, which can stand for: Sexy/sweet/super Intelligent/interesting Exciting/elegant/enjoyable Radiant/random Rambunctious/royal Amazing/awesome/always-there

I absolutely love this name, of course, since it is my name! It's a strong, independent, beautiful name. No one at my school has this name and I think I've only met one other Sierra in my life. My name also means, "nature's beauty", and for all you out there calling my name "white trash", well, you can all back off because I am very proud of having this name. I love being a Sierra!
This name is amazing. It's my best friends name so anybody who has this name is totally cool, but not as cool as her. I had to talk myself out of not putting this comment under "famous bearer' you know you are all jealous.Lol. But in all seriousness, it's a pretty cool name, especially with the middle name Rain, and I'm not just saying this because it's my friend's name!
I like the way this name is pronounced, it's nice to say and it doesn't sound frilly. The meaning (mountain range) would and should be very appreciated by any of the bearers of this name. It means you're tough but beautiful, as are mountains. I have a good friend called Sierra - whom I would rather have as more than a friend but never mind that - and it suits her personality perfectly. This name is very beautiful, definitely my favorite.

You people who think this name's ugly, you need to back off! This is my name, and I'm nothing like what most of you have said.

I'm not a big fan of this name it makes me think of Sierra Mist, you know the soda. And this little girl my sister used to play with. Personally I like the 's' spelling better than the 'c' spelling but I've never been a fan of weird spellings (the exception being Gillian and Jillian I like both versions fine.)
This name is not "white trash." To bananarama: you seem to use the term "white trash" to describe many names. This is racist and if I were you I'd work on that.

Please consider the feelings of the people who have this name, it's my name, my mother proudly gave it to me, I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world, it describes a person who is tough, yet beautiful, they can be elegant, they are always caring and loving, even toward an enemy, and would do anything for friends or family, please do not call my name white trash, I assure you it's not.
This is one of my least favorite names of all. I definitely would not want to go through life being named after a mountain range. I remember the first time I heard this name as a child, and I made fun of it.

I don't like it. It makes me think of Sierra Leone, which I've heard is a very poor country. I don't find it very pretty either.
I much prefer this spelling to Ciera. And I'd imagine people find the way it's spelt easier to pronounce, what with all of the Keira's and Kiera's and Ciara's about. :)
Sierra is a beautiful and unique name. People who have this name are fiercely protective of the people that they love. Friendship is held in high regard, and betrayal cuts deep. They like to be respected, and most of all, they like to be loved.

This is a beautiful and unique name! But I'd like to spell it Cierrah.
