I'm surprised by how many people consider this name to be inappropriate on an adult. It is such an elegant name. Because it means tranquility, it sounds dignified, mature, rational, and strong.
I don’t hate it but I’m not crazy about it either. I would use Serena.

I don’t really like this name. I don’t super dislike it either. But I can kind of appreciate how it follows the “-ity” format.Felicia- Felicity Trina- Trinity Amy- Amity Serena- Serenity Obviously, it’s more word-y, and Trina and Trinity have different etymologies, but still. Serena goes well with it. I hope I didn’t start a trend by pointing this out though. Imagine like, Olivity or something. That would be bad.
In my opinion, Serenity is a stunningly gorgeous name with a beautiful calming charm about it. It brings to mind a peaceful meadow with tall grass and weeds swaying in a gentle breeze; a sweet fawn drinking from and dwelling nearby a graceful blue river; an open green pasture; cozied up in a blanket, sipping hot chocolate under a midnight sky decorated in gorgeously bright sparkling stars. I adore the name Serenity, as it's one of my favorites. Especially paired with Rose: Serenity Rose. What a gorgeous name.
This name is simply stunning! Sound - elegant Spelling - pleasant Meaning - beautifulOverall it's glorious and gorgeous! I'd be happy to meet someone named Serenity one day!
My name is Serenity and I love my name! I always get compliments on my name because it’s very pretty. I love it so much and all the letters blend into an amazing word. I don’t get bullied, for all you wondering. I get complimented and I have an interesting life because of my name. I love my life! (I’m 12)

My name is Serenity Meadow M, most people think that my parents are hippies because of my spiritual down to earth name. Truly they're just middle class people who fell in love with the name. I personally love my name, even though I'm definitely not peaceful or quiet. I like to think of it as the calm before the storm, the calm is when we first meet, then the storm is when we become close and I'm comfortable enough to be as loud and obnoxious as possible. I love everything about this name as it is spiritual, and down to earth and I hope you consider this as a name for your child.
I named my daughter Serenity because I personally think it is a beautiful name. Also, its kind of a tribute to my late sister who passed away from cancer. I would think of the Fergie song Big Girls Don't Cry when she would say "clarity, peace, Serenity". It always made me think of my sister. Also, her brother is named Sincere and I felt it matched perfectly. Before I even thought of the name Serenity, I thought to name her Sequoia because I love nature and it sounds so beautiful and unique. Maybe that will be my next daughter's name in the future. I don't regret the decision of naming my daughter Serenity. All the people who say "well I know a Serenity and she is the opposite of her name", tell me what a Tiffany or Nancy is supposed to act like. Just because Serenity means peace it doesn't mean the person has to be that way.. Let's get real. I don't think I would name any of my children with regular names. Life is so beautiful and the meanings behind things are beautiful as well. It depends on what type of person you are and what life of other things mean to you.
I want to name my daughter Serenity. The meaning is as beautiful as the name sounds, plus I ran into this dread head but the problem was I couldn't be with him. I promised him when I was twelve I would name my daughter Serenity after he said he wanted a daughter named Serenity and I'm keeping my promise no matter who I fall in love with and have a daughter with. That will be her name. I'm 16 now I plan having kids between 22-26.

I love Serenity, but prefer the Welsh name Seren. Serenity is one of the only virtue names I care for, and it's very pretty.

Sorry, I can't get past it being a brand of personal hygiene products.

I think this name is beautiful. I knew a girl with this name, she was the complete opposite of calm, peaceful or serene. But she just went by Ren.
My late husband and I named our baby girl, Serenity Rain and as it turned out my husband passed away peacefully with cancer Nov15 2009 during an early morning light rain. Serenity was born six weeks later Dec.30.
I once knew a girl named Serenity. She was rude, disrespectful, and often got into trouble with our high school's teachers and staff. She was the only person I've ever known with this name, so she's immediately what comes to mind. Which is a shame, because it's a pretty sounding name, if a bit trendy for my taste. I prefer the similar names Seren or Serena, neither of which have that particular association for me.
My name is Serenity and when I was a kid I wished my name was something more common like Ashley or Sarah. Now that I'm a young adult I absolutely love my name and the uniqueness that it holds. I'm not sure why so many people have a hard time picturing adults with this name.
To all people who have bashed the name, I'm defending it because I'm one of them in the world. I'm 16 years old. I personally think it's a beautiful name. To all the Serenity's out there I think we have one of the most beautiful names ever. If anyone tells you differently, don't believe them.
I love the name and I don't like the negative comments and to all you named Serenity I agree it is beautiful and thank you for defending it. I'm 5 months pregnant. Well her name will be Serenity. I don't feel her kick often, & she gives me a sense of peace. I feel that already she is a calm chill baby and even if she grows up to be a "loud mouth" she got that from daddy & mommy not the name! I love this name plus the prayer too if you don't know the Serenity prayer than google it!
This was the name of every brooding "original character" written into fan fiction by emo kids back in 2007 so that they could vicariously sleep with their favorite video game/anime/manga character. The only people I can imagine giving this name to a real baby are teenage post-scene kids living in godforsaken, strip mall laden exurbs in the Sun Belt. Yuck!
I wanted to share my honest first reaction to this name was "Serenity! What kind of name is that?" I said this to my husband upon just finding out my friend had named their daughter this. But I will admit that my initial negative reaction was purely ignorance. I'd never heard of it as a name before. Years later I was pregnant and came across the name again, and I felt very differently about it. I have a sister called Sarah who I thought this could honour, and I liked the way it had the Welsh name Seren in it, which means 'star', and there is the calm meaning of Serenity as a whole. A virtue that I endeavour to emulate. And I am a Joss Whedon fan! I now love this name, as does my husband, and although we moved away and lost touch with my old friend, it might be a good thing as we are seriously considering this name for our baby girl! If not a first name, it would also make a fantastic middle.

The name Serenity is a very beautiful name. Also it is MY NAME! To all those jerks who are saying bad things about this name, then you are probably jealous because this name is better than yours. It is not a stripper name and if it is a diaper brand then WHO CARES! If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything! This website is not for you guys to be major jerks! Sorry if this hurts your feelings but you probably don't care about all the Serenity's out there who got their feelings hurt because of your comments! So as I was saying, Serenity is a beautiful name and it has a beautiful meaning! Do not add any more mean comments, or I will get even more upset(and the other Serenity's out there!).
My name is Serenity Starr, and I would like to say that I love my name because I'm calm, independent, and collected. I recommend this name. I think it is beautiful and explains how humanity should be. We all have our opinions and this is my opinion. So please no response to this comment, there's no need.
I am absolutely in love with this name. I named my daughter Serenity. I wanted a name that conveyed my philosophy that happiness, love and Serenity are the most important virtues in life. It's not money or anything that takes away from your true happiness. Making decisions based on values that are meaningful and fulfilling. For my most precious baby, I named her Serenity :)
This name is beautiful! I will definitely be naming my daughter this. It is unique and lovely. It looks nice when written, sounds nice when spoken and has a beautiful meaning. I think people bag out names like this because they would rather play it safe and stick to names that thousands of other people have. They are afraid. Especially to be different from the crowd. People who can't imagine a politician, public servant or even "adult" with this name, most likely have insecurities of their own. It is more important to see people for who they are than merely judging them by their name according to your personal taste. You don't have to love this name to appreciate it. Serenity... What a beautiful name.
MY name is Serenity. These comments have me cracking up actually because your responses are so ignorant. It's a "stripper name", "diapers", "grown women can't use that name". I'm 23 years old and have a respected and amazing job working overseas. I got my degree in 2 years and I'm currently working on my masters. To put myself through college I worked at a LIBRARY, and taught part time. No naked dancing, lol. So many kids/adults with basic names like ASHLEY, BRITTNEY, AND TIFFANY, RENEE, (the list goes on) comment on how lovely my name is. And you know what? I love my name, it's one of the things that makes me unique along with all the other parts of myself. So ladies and gentlemen if you name your child Serenity there is no guarantee that she will be a success but I sure as hell am and everyone who meets me never forgets my name. Serenity--a lovely emotion & name as well.
I don't know why, but when I saw this name and read it in my head, I fell in love. I, personally, think it sounds so beautiful, like the name of a sea or of an elegant ship braving the ocean. I might not use it as a first name, but definitely as a middle name. Or if I did use it as a first name, I would probably give her a nickname such as Serena.

Such anger and venom on here towards this (and other) names is shocking. This is my daughter's name and it is beautiful. Despite not being 2 years old yet she tries her best to pronounce her own name as do all the other children in her nursery, although the majority seem to go with Enity! We shorten it to Ren. The utter rubbish spouted by an earlier poster about it not being a name for an adult is a load of tosh, I pity you and the world you live in. Everyone who has met my daughter loves the name. Lighten up people.
Sure, that precious little baby girl might look so serene when you hold her in your arms for the first time, but just you wait until she reaches the terrible twos... I can hardly even picture this name on a preschooler, let alone an adult.
Honestly this name is absolutely beautiful. It means so much to me on so many levels. Perhaps because it makes me think of the moon (which is one of my very favourite things in life). And also somewhat because it makes me think of someone very important to me. I very much like its meaning, its appearance, and its sound. When working in tandem with solemnity there is quite a beautiful combination (which is also reminiscent of what I have already mentioned). Honestly, I've no idea why so many people seem to bash this name. Calling it tacky, lame, unfitting of adulthood, fitting of a stripper even (don't ask me), corny, unnatural, not right sounding, unfitting of public officials, fitting of a girl's toy pony, unfitting of aged individuals, and some people have even stated that they despise the name altogether. Why would anyone be so horrendously picky about it. Is it not a good thing to be able to just be happy about such a name, and not get frustrated over it? Is being so picky not an obstacle to happiness, overall? Think of the people who carry this name, and how they might feel about such terribly judgmental reactions. Why not let them enjoy the meaning of their name, and perhaps even, allow them to strive toward adhering to it. If your reactions toward this name are so absurdly volatile, I would advise you to have a bit more Serenity yourself... I agree with what erb816 had to say. Does it truly matter, whether or not someone fills the meaning of their name when growing up? If so, there are plenty of other names which should also never be chosen because "you don't know that they will grow up to be that way." That shouldn't matter at all. And if anything, names are often analogous with self-fulfilling prophecies in that they certainly do contribute to influencing one's personality. But that aside, there should be nothing wrong with naming someone after words with meanings such as this. I honestly wish that the people launching such objections to it would just relax a bit. Going along with what I said before about having a bit more Serenity themselves. I wrote this merely in full expression of my ideas, and meant not to offend anyone. If I have done so, I sincerely apologize.
It's got a pretty sound, yes. But let's be honest: it's incredibly tacky, and what's the chance the girl will actually fit her name? How can you be sure she'll be calm and quiet and, well, serene? I go to school with a girl named Serenity, and she's a loud-mouth who often has to be sent out of the classroom. Even worse are the alternate spellings: Sereintiy, Serranitie, Sarynitee. You may as well call her Chasstedie (Chastity) or Philesitee (Felicity).
As far as virtue names go, this one isn't too bad. It's quite pretty and feminine, and personally I don't think it would only fit well on a little girl. My main problem with it is its association with that one Seinfeld episode... I keep hearing the characters screaming, "Serenity now!" in my mind when I hear this name.

I am sorry, but I cannot imagine this name on an actual person. Unlike other word names, such as Prudence, Temperence, or Verity, this name does not seem to have the "established for centuries" bearing behind it. This was once the name of one of my cats, but again, I cannot imagine it on a human. It seems kind of, well, cheesy.
I would understand a hardcore Firefly/Joss Whedon fan naming their daughter this, but I wouldn't personally name my child this. But because of Firefly, I like this name (for a character or such), especially with the nickname "Ren".
All I can think of when I hear this name is the movie Serenity, and River Tam beating everyone up. Not a very good association, especially for a name with a meaning like Serenity.

It's actually pretty (and I don't like most word names) but it's really hard to picture on an adult. Will not age well at all.
I like the name. The only problem is that "sere" means something like to shit in Croatian.

I fell in love with this name after watching the movie Serenity. I wouldn't name my daughter this, but maybe a character in a story instead.(And I didn't know it was a brand of adult diapers until now. I'll just ignore that assocation. XD)
This name makes me think of adult diapers. What if this girl develops a psychotic, larger-than-life personality? And just imagine a public official with this name!
It's a hopelessly corny name, and it actually sounds a bit like a Harlequin novel character. I don't really like any of these names ending in -ity, like Charity, Felicity, and, the horror of all horrors, Chastity. This is certainly the best one out of those, but it's still very corny.
Ugh, I really dislike this name. It's so tacky and will sound horrible on a grown woman. Just because something's cute on a little girl doesn't mean it'll fit her as she ages!
Try thinking of an important person. A senator. Named Serenity Smith. And try not to simultaneously snort derisively and cry.

I can refrain from that. Very easily. The condescension in these comments baffles me. I don't understand the difficulty of imagining an adult with this name. It's not terrible at all! Is the like-sounding (and root-sharing) Serena looked at in a similar fashion? Because that has been used for ages! What about Felicity? Heck, throw Verity in too! And Charity! None of these are terrible, and all fit little girls and adults. (Although I agree that Chastity is awful, but that has nothing to do with how it sounds.)
I personally don't like it, but you could always use a nickname for it such as Wren or Seri.

My almost-2-month-old niece was named Serenity Dawn. Which all together means 'peaceful sunset'. I absolutely loathe this name. I was trying to convince my sister against using it, but she's very stubborn. So now my little niece will have to put up with her awful name, as I did mine.
