Rosie Ruiz is a Cuban American runner who took part in the 1980 Boston Marathon, easily achieving a new female record in the competition and the third best female time in marathons altogether. She was quickly disqualified however, when it was revealed (in addition to other severe reasons of doubt) that witnesses had seen her join the run from the sidelines under a mile before the finishing line. Later on it was found out that Ruiz had also cheated on the marathon that had qualified her for the Boston race, that time by pretending to be injured and then taking the subway to the goal.

A famous fictional bearer would be Rosie the Riveter, a character partially made popular by artist Norman Rockwell during World War Two. She was intended to represent feminism and woman's importance in factories making things for the war effort. The character actually originated in 1942 in a song by Redd Evans and John Jacob Loeb in which Rosie was described as a determined assembly line worker during WW2. The Rosie in the song is said to be based off of Rosie Bonavitas, a woman from California.
