Some time ago I sent IPA pronunciation in Portuguese for this name, and it wasn't quite right. /ʁu.ˈdɾi.ɡu/ for European Portuguese is correct, but /ʁo.ˈdɾi.ɡu/ for Brazilian is much more rare.The average Brazilian pronounces it like /xo.ˈdɾi.ɡu/.
The ʁ phoneme is used in only some Brazilian dialects, such as the Gaúcho in some parts, and only the elderly. Youngest generations of Gaúcho dialect are dropping the ʁ usage.As Wikipedia puts it: "The rhotic consonant represented as /ʁ/ has considerable variation across different variants, being pronounced as [x], [h], [χ], [ɦ], [ʀ], [r] etc."The R in beginning of words in Brazilian Portuguese can be transcribed in the IPA as a huge variety of phonemes as noted, but the most common way of all is the "x" one, a voiceless velar fricative consonant.All Brazilian names starting with "R" follow the same, not only Rodrigo.
