I cannot believe no one has mentioned Richard Matheson!Richard Matheson (1926-2013) was a science-fiction/fantasy/horror author and screenwriter. He's probably best known for writing I Am Legend and What Dreams May Come, but he also wrote several Twilight Zone episodes, and the Star Trek: The Original Series episode The Enemy Within.
