The name itself is laughable, and anyone who named their child this deserves jail time!
Oh, don't be like that. You can't fault anyone for naming their baby what they think is truly appropriate for *their* baby. Renesmee, for instance, was invented for a fictional character and wasn't intended to be used on real people. But people came to think of it as a truly fine name, and if you don't like it, that's totally fine. However, your message states that naming a child this is akin to child abuse, which only breeds hostility. It's OK to say you don't like a name, but putting it down like this isn't helping matters. You've got nothing to prove to anyone by being hyperbolic.
Making such an obvious joke is not hurting anyone. In response to what you have said about parents being able to decide what they want for their kids: sure! Sure they can, but that doesn't mean it's a good decision. This name, in my opinion, as well as the vast majority of people using this site, this is not a good name. People name their children plenty of things, like Darth Vader, Talulah Does The Hula From Hawaii, and Pistol. Parents may have the legal right to decide a name for their child, but a child, let's not forget, is an independent human being, who will be the one who has to suffer the consequences of their parents actions regarding their name. I understand that Renesmee was intended for a fictional character, which is part of what makes it so ridiculous. You, along with a minority of die-hard Twilight fan parents in the UK, may find it acceptable, but so many people don't! If you look for Renesmee as a legal name on an actual child, the vast majority of the feedback will be negative. The way I heard of this name wasn't actually from the book, but from a post online about the worst name someone had ever heard, and it was Renesmee, and quite literally everyone thought it was stupid and hilarious. Imagine having to carry such a name around with you. I came across a mother who was complaining that everyone was saying she must hate her daughter after she named her Renesmae, because it is a tragic mismatch of two perfectly fine names that is, as I've found, quite strongly tied to a book series. Now my obvious exaggeration about how Renesmee parents deserve jail time was, as stated, an exaggeration. Am I not allowed to joke on the internet? It's not like my comment will lead to the mass murder of Renesmee parents. There are people who write articles or dedicate entire social media pages to stupid names people give their children, and me making a jokingly overstated comment is not going to prevent the parents of Renesmees from living their lives. My goal was not to make a strong point, but to poke fun of a name that is widely regarded as bad (just stating the facts), which, let's face it, half the people in the comments on this website are already doing. It's not a big deal, don't be mad because not everyone likes the names you like.
I like it for a imaginary character. I prefer Renesmay (of course people may mistakenly pronounce it Rosemary) but I like the original too.
I adore Esmée & Renée is lovely in its own right but Renesmee feels rather comical & reads as meme-fodder within pop-culture at this point. From within the Twilight universe & in reader reception both it's been relentlessly touted as ridiculous & over the top. It also comes off incredibly 'Twilight/YA super-fan' to me personally.
Just like Daenerys and Khaleesi, this name only works for the fictional character.
My parents named me this, and I was heavily bullied for having this as my name. I hated it as my name, they think I like it because it's unique and "pretty" but it's not and has made my life a living hell. I now am changing my name after coming out as trans and am happy that once I do, I will be able to surpass the bullying I once received. If you have this as your name, and you like it that's your opinion and I respect it this is just my opinion and I hope you didn't go/are going through what I went though. Have a good day/night.
I would use use Renée, or Esme / Esmée. For some reason whenever I look at this name I have to urge to say ren-EHS-mee instead of -may at the end since that’s how Esme is pronounced. Renesmee isn’t a very cute name or even pretty compared to the elegant, and classy Renee or beautiful and unique Esme. Just a weird, unpleasant mash-up name from a book and movie.
