Rachel

El is one of the names of God. Daniel, Ezekiel are other names that have El in them. Rachel may mean “The Lord leads me, as a lamb or sheep”. Psalm 23.

The standard Polish form of this name is Rachela, although Rachel has also been in use. It's considered an archaic form of Rachela and you can see it in older Bible translations. Neither Rachela nor Rachel are popular names in Poland and have never been, and as far as I know it's mostly Jews who use them. Last year (2019) two girls were given the name Rachel in Poland as a middle name. Neither Rachela nor Rachel was in the ranking as a first name. In January 2020, there were 283 women in Poland with the first name Rachel, and 178 women had it as a middle name. If a Rachel is using the old Polish pronunciation rather than the English one, the nicknames could be the same as for Rachela.

According to two websites I've found, they both cite that Rachel means "to journey as a ewe that is a good traveller". Interesting!

The meaning of "ewe" refers to Rachel being the mother of the Israelites. If you've ever heard the phrase "Rachel weeping for her children" you will understand this. If it hadn't been for Jacob's loving Rachel he wouldn't have ended up tricked into marrying her sister and then worked another seven years to marry Rachel herself. Thus the 12 tribes of Israel all come from her, if indirectly. That makes her the mother of the flock. Sheep are a common biblical referrence.

The name Rachel also means "innocence and gentility of a rose" and may mean "lovely", though that is debated.

In Hebrew Rachel means innocent lamb.

May mean "Lamb of God".

In Judaism the ewe is a symbol of innocence and beauty.

The original Hebrew form of this name is Rahel (rah-khel).
