Apollo's epithet Πυθιος (Pythios) originated from his cult in the city of Πυθώ (Pytho), which is nowadays known as Delphi. The city's name is ultimately derived from the Greek verb πυθώ (putho) or (pytho) meaning "to rot, to decay".
