Comments (Meaning / History Only)

The origin and meaning of the name is correct but... it was used (and still is) in Portugal long before it was used in Spain and Italy. There were men named PORPHYRIOS in Portugal soon after the arrival of the Roman Empire in Portugal. A scribe of one Roman commander was called PORPHYRIOS and lived in Conimbriga (present day Coimbra), a famous city in Portugal, where sciences of all kinds had their 'schools'. Portugal was the only country which was not 'invaded' by force and war, by the Roman Empire, with both parties signing a agreement of cooperation. Portugal at the time was called Lusitania.
