Gender Masculine
Meaning & History
Latinized form of Greek Πηνειός (Peneios), which is either derived from Greek πῆνος (pēnos) "web" or from Greek πήνη (pēnē) "thread, weft" (see Penelope). Both words eventually derive from the same Indo-European root *(s)pen- "to spin". In Greek mythology, Peneus was a Thessalian river god, the son of Oceanus and Tethys.
