I generally like this name, I have got my second born on 9 December 2016 and I gave her that name. Hopeful she will change the negative attitude some have about the name. Her brother JAYDEN is the one choosing that name from the list of five names.
Myra is my name. It was my great, great grandmother's name. Everyone tells me they like it. It isn't an everyday name! Mispronounced & spelled wrong often. Our background is English & German... My siblings have plain, everyday names!
I have often been told that my name, Myra means "fate" in Greek. I am always glad when people mention St. Nicholas as the Bishop of Myra as it proves that the name was NOT "created" by some 17th Century English writer. It was quite common for English men and women who were well educated to "tour the continent" and visit ancient sites and cities. My aunt named me and I love my name. I was the only Myra in Kissimmee, Florida in 1953-1971... don't know about now. I love my name and my children and friends know it. I have never heard it as a grandmother name.
You shouldn't let one bad person ruin a good name. Charles Manson was a terrible murderer, but Charles is still used. Same with Jeffrey Dahmer. It just seems silly to me.

I'm from the United States, so the name Myra isn't taboo here, but through independent research I am aware of Myra Hindley and Ian Brady, and their horrendous crimes (Ian was already such a common name that I can understand why that, too, did not become taboo in the U.K.).However, someone named Myra in the U.S. might get her name misspelled a lot, depending on where she lives, because among the Hispanic population "Mayra" is a very popular name (particularly in the 80s and early 90s - my generation). That's probably why Myra doesn't sound exotic to my ears.
You have to admire a Myra! That is my name and what I have always had sung to me. My name has brought me happiness and luck.Friendly greeting "Hiya" and "Myra" have a similar ringI would apologize for Myra Hindley and Ian Brady but it was nothing to do with me... try to broaden your mind a little folks! :-)
Myra is a bit unusual and has a very cool sound to it. I have never heard of the murderer and had no idea there was any such association anywhere. My only example of one is the female cat from Little Toot! Anyway, it's a shame--that individual is obviously not famous enough that people should feel turned off of a perfectly good name just because a bad person happened to bear it. :p.
Never heard of a murderer with this name, (I'm from the US) but I still am not a big fan of it. It sounds like an old lady name, and I usually like old names. But this is one of the old names along the likes of Mildred and Edna that should never make a comeback. I knew a girl with this name once, and she wasn't exactly the nicest person, so that could be another reason why I don't like it very much. Although, I have to say, it's loads better than Madison, Kayla, or Caitlin.

Like the murderer? There aren't enough people named Myra for this name to have an association with anyone but her.

A lovely, pretty name. ☺ Don't let a murderer be the one to decide for you that you shouldn't choose this name! ಠ╭╮ಠ.

Tori Amos changed her name from this because she thought this name makes guys ''go limp''. I don't get that. This is a pretty name, and it's quite cool too. It doesn't sound too ''out there'', and it's okay for little girls, teens, and grown women alike. Neither is the name too popular.
