Myra Adele Logan (1908 - 1977) is known as the first African American female physician, surgeon, and anatomist to perform a successful open-heart surgery. Following this accomplishment, Logan focused her work on children's heart surgery and was involved in the development of the antibiotic Aureomycin which treated bacterial, viral, and rickettsial diseases with the majority of her medical practice done at the Harlem Hospital in New York. Logan attended medical school during the pre–Civil Rights era. The majority of black female physicians in this time period had to go to a separatist school away from white women. Earning a medical degree as an African American woman during this time period was extremely difficult from a social standpoint.

Myra McDaniel (1932 – 2010) was an American politician and lawyer. She was the first African American to be the Secretary of State of Texas. With that appointment, she also became the then-highest-appointed African American to ever serve in the Texas government. She went on to enter private practice again after that appointment and at her firm, became the first African American woman to lead a major law firm as a managing partner.

Myra Lester is the heroine played by Vivien Leigh in the film “Waterloo Bridge”. I’m from the UK and am too young to remember the Moors Murderers, but I’d be shocked if anyone who sees Vivien in this film still thinks the name is awful. I mean - she plays a ballerina! The ending is sad but its worth watching!
