Funny how every other comment here is downvoted. I’m gonna keep it a stack here. Objectively I feel neutral on this name, it’s not horrible or anything but I’m not a fan. I agree with one other commenter that Monroe has some pretty heavy baggage with it. I also think of the Monroe Doctrine, and obviously Marilyn Monroe both which have some interesting associations with it. I think the name is pretty, cool, but also has a lot of handsomeness to it. That being said, I don’t know why people are being so picky about it on a girl. The only reason why people who using it on a boy to begin with is because of James Monroe. And let’s not act like James is better than Monroe on a girl.
To the person who said Marilyn Monroe hated her name, where is your proof? She actually legally changed her name to Marilyn Monroe in 1956. (her birth name was Norma Jeane Mortenson) Besides, not everyone who names their child Monroe has her in mind. She's not the only person in the world with this name.
100% Marilyn Monroe to me, so I see it as a girl's name.I wouldn't use it because Marilyn Monroe hated her name so it doesn't feel like a tribute to her at all.
I honestly had no idea that this name was unisex. I thought it was a boy's name. I like it. It's handsome. Mo is a great nickname too!
Uh, I really don’t like this name. The name Monroe sounds weird with e after o.
I know one Monroe, a 60+ year old man. I can’t see this on a child.
Awful name. Strongly dislike, sorry.
Feminine. I know the nicest little female Monroe! Except she is MIN-roe. Spelled the same.
I think it sounds rather pretentious as a first name. Also, how the hell is this feminine?
I used to think that Munroe was a girl name. But now I think its unisex.
Please don’t do this to a poor child. I would absolutely hate being stuck with this name!
I honestly thought Monroe was a girl's name and would never have considered it for a boy, not masculine enough in my opinion- sounds feminine. I love it for a girl.
I named my son Monroe Ellis H. I like the masculine sound to it. We call him Mo a lot though.
Some people choose this due to the association with Marilyn Monroe. It's unfair to name your kid after Marilyn Monroe (a stage name, obviously). Norma was an early example of a regular-looking girl getting cosmetic surgery and bleaching her hair to contribute to America's already overly sexualized cesspool of ditzy Hollywood females. Have some class.
My grandfather’s name was Wilson Monroe Baker, born Feb 4, 1900. He was 72 when I was born and he and my grandmother raised me. He was the kindest, most loving “papa” I had- he was the only Papa I had. I have many wonderful memories of him and Ethel (Pilcher) my grandmother. If we had been blessed with a son, his name would have been Baker Monroe Claxton.
Such a strange name to me. A little boy on Spongebob was named Monroe.
I see this name as extremely masculine, mostly because of James Monroe Iglehart (he plays Genie in the Broadway version of Aladdin). I honestly had no idea it was even remotely popular for girls.
One of my cousins gave this hideous name to his daughter two years ago. It's ugly and it doesn't even sound feminine. And if it's after Marilyn Monroe, what's so goddamn bad about using Marilyn? Granted, it is an ugly name, but Monroe is way uglier and trashier.
I find the name Monroe to be very sexy-smart.
When I think of the name Monroe I visualize a women.
A beautiful skinny rock star chick with lots of piercings and tattoos, wearing bad ass glasses.
I love this name because of the picture it can paint in my head.
And I love the picture I see. Monroe fo sho:)
I think this is a great name! I like it, its simple, yet different than typical names like Jacob or Nick. It also seems like a great name to grow up with. I would consider this for a first or middle name.
I'm beginning to enjoy the name Monroe, for a boy. I think it's classic, mature, and ages well.
I know a poor girl by the full name of Madison Monroe _____.
I had no idea this incredibly masculine name was even acceptable for a female middle name until I met her. She has the most butch, horrid name I've ever heard on a girl.
That aside, I love this name on a boy, but it sounds better as a surname.
I hate this as a first name. It sounds awfully pretentious, and it makes me think of the unlucky character in MAD magazine.
I love Monroe as a middle name.
I think that Monroe would be great as a middle name! Amity Monroe, too cute!
I love this name a lot for a girl. I first heard it in a movie I have forgotten the name of. Last of the Mohicans! I have just remembered. (Remember, the chick who threw herself off the cliff? And her sister is yelling, "Muuuuun rooooooooooeeeeeeee").
