I want to edit and correct the record regarding my original comment that I've made back in 2015 regarding the usage of the name Moe. I've made that comment, seen below, when I didn't do nearly as much research on it (hadn't had the foresight to grab names from town PR magazines for my research that I published on my research blog), data from Namae Jiten only went as far as 2003 (it was updated a long while ago to expand to 2009) and Baby Calendar did not have a dedicated website for baby popularity. Yes, Moe was somewhat popular (within the top 100) in the 1990s and early 2000s (peaking at over 0.6% in 2000), but that was when the slang term wasn't heard of as much in the mainstream. When the slang term became increasingly known around 2004-5, Moe as a name fell down in popularity, dropping to around 0.1% or less. ---------------------- ORIGINAL COMMENT (+3 rating before October 8, 2022 edit): Despite the association with the slang verb 'moeru' (萌える) where you have a crush with an anime character, the name is in 72nd place out of 1000 in 2014 when used with 萌. Moe, using the phonetic characters (もえ) is in 817th place. The name (萌 and もえ) was in 63rd and 3993rd in 1989 respectively which is before the slang verb and the Moe girls became known.Popularity source: http://5go.biz/sei/cgi/ninki2.htm & http://www.namaejiten.com/h01/girl01.html.
