Mitchell

Mitchell is a strong masculine name. I chose it for my son because I wanted a strong male name that wasn't bizarre or faddish and because it can be shortened to Mitch which is still a name.

Hate it. Sounds like the name of some snobby British guy.

I personally think this is a very handsome and classic name for a boy.

I always liked this name as an alternative to the all too popular Michael. Although I think its reputation is very bad (Mitchell's are said to be douchy). Also I don't think Mitchell from the movie Moxie is gonna help this name.

In London the Mitchell surname has a feeling of power attached to it, even a TV series staring a Mitchell family were cast as the villains. Having a Mitchell surname myself I found the name made me popular and weirdly respected... I've no idea how some of you have connected being a Mitchell to being a nerd or being picked on.. both Mitchells in my school were tough. So if you're a Mitchell and you're getting picked on, sort yourself out, you're supposed to be brave and fearless... don't let down our name Mr Mitchell!

I hate this name. It's just so nerdy and old school and makes me think of little old men.

I know more girls with this name than men. Last year I encountered the first girl.

This is my first name. Given that I have a lifetime of experience answering to it, here are a few observations I have which may help if anyone is considering this name for a child:

* Yes, the concerns about being teased and bullied with this name are indeed somewhat valid. ANY name that can be made to rhyme with the word 'bitch' is going to be fraught with peril. I have also been teased with the name 'Michelle' more times than I ever cared to hear it.

* Be aware that finding personalized gift shop items with this name is surprisingly difficult. Most gift shops I visit will have items for Michael and Michelle, but not for me. A notable example was when I visited the Corn Palace in South Dakota (which is doubly frustrating, because the name of the town where it is located is actually Mitchell!)

* Also be aware that, if you name your child this, you are condemning him to a lifetime of people misspelling his name, and also asking, "Is that with one L, or two?" (Though, this can be avoided by using the shorter form 'Mitch'.)

* On the positive side, though-- Mitchell is a nice middle-ground between being too conspicuous and being too common. The name saw a spike of popularity from the 80s into the mid-90s, so it's not as rare as it used to be... but it's still a decent alternative if you think 'Michael' is overused. It's a name that automatically affords me the ability to stand out in most groups. It also has a very distinct British or Scottish feeling to it, even more than Michael.

* The ultimate etymology being essentially the same as Michael ('who is like God?'), I'm actually pretty happy with what the name actually means. It works in both religious and secular circumstances.

* I personally never really warmed up to the short version 'Mitch', though I will let people call me by that name if I am on very close terms with them (family or really good friends). Otherwise, I tend to think 'Mitch' doesn't really suit me. However, that's a personal preference, and your experience with the name may differ.

I think of an old grandfather when I hear this name.

Actually that's my crush's name, and it's pretty cool. We call him Mitch, and the sound of that is just so HAWT.

This is a great name for a boy. It's also one of the more classy, traditional surnames used as first names opposed to a lot of the modern, tacky ones.

Handsome name, but would probably never use it due to the association with the gay guy Mitchell from "Modern Family".

This name is a great alternative to Michael, which is an extremely common name. Michael sounds good too but Mitchell sounds somewhat younger and more energetic than Michael. I know that the short form of the name rhymes with a bad word but I won't mind giving my future kid this name. However, there's a bad association with the name: Hurricane Mitch in 1998 claimed almost 20000 lives in Central America, which put it as the 2nd deadliest hurricane on record.

I don't really like this name. It just doesn't have that great of a sound to it, plus it's quite old fashioned. I can only picture it on adults or old men.

I love the name "Mitchell" because it's nice and God fearing. At first when I was given the name Mitchell I was angry. Now I can see the usefulness of the name. My name is "Mitchell".

Classic name for a powerful man. I don't prefer the nickname "Mitch" though.

Another Essex chav name. Mitchell when spoken in the finest estuary twang reminds one of council estates and tattoos.

This name is awful. I can't stand the nickname Mitch and it sounds like the name of some trashy British guy who spends all his time at the bar drinking beer and whiskey. Plus Mitchel Musso is a pretty bad association too, considering he has criminal charges for drunk driving. And then there's Hurricane Mitch. Definitely not a name I would ever consider!

The name Mitchell is freaking sexy and HOT! It's a very respectable sounding name that ages well. :D.

Soooo much better than Michael in my opinion, and Mitch is a cute nickname.

To be honest with you, I LOVE this name, but probably would never name a boy this because you know at some point he would get teased by someone calling him "Mitch the Bitch".

I have a cousin Mitchy aka Mitchell. I like this name better than Michael. It isn't that popular at all.

I like this name! But ugh, it looks SO feminine to me spelled Mitchell, I prefer it spelled Mitchel.

WHY would you name a kid this? It is my least favourite name out of all names. Eek, it sounds like fingernails down a blackboard. Mitchell. It's the 'itch' sound especially. Just don't name your son this.

I don't consider Mitchell unusual or refreshing at all. This name is very popular for teens and early 20s in my area.

I have an uncle named Mitchell. It's so sweet and gentleman-like. I've only met a few other Mitchells. I'm glad this name isn't overused, it's a nice change from Michael, although I've met plenty of Michaels who were nice and handsome.

I really like this name, although it seems to be getting kind of common, but it isn't as overly used as Michael.

My best friend's name is Mitchell. It's actually his middle name. I love it. I think it is a little bit unique. I was quite shocked when it said that it came from the name Michael.
