Lovely interesting name, I think just as much Welsh as it is English? Perhaps more so. I've read that Meryl means: bright sea, blackbird, shining sea.

Meryl and Muriel have one of the most attractive name meanings I've come across- "bright sea". Unusual, quietly beautiful names.

This name has really really grown on me. You know what, I kind of love it! The meaning "bright sea" is intriguing, strong and wholesome. There is a reason a woman as bright as Miss Streep selected Meryl as a stage name. Cutesy frilly princess names like Arabelliniana-Gracierose are so overdone that a name like Meryl with roots that date back beyond the Norman Conquest stands out as quietly confident and rather charming. Great choice!

A refreshing change from all of the regular names and the superfluous frilly ones. Absolutely adore the charming meanings of Meryl 'bright shining sea' and 'blackbird' and love love love the sister names Merryn and Meriel. An underrated, understated brilliant girl's name.

I really love my name and I thank my parents for giving me that name, but some people always pronounced my name wrong like Merl, Meller, Merrer and many more. When someone asks me my name I always say it clear and loud because they pronounce it wrong often.
My name is Merril. It is not in the database, but my parents found it in an unusual name book, so the spelling is NOT made up. I LOVE my name SOOOO much! I like my spelling the best, but if it wasn't spelled like that, I'd like Meryl second best. In the unusual name book, the name Merril was derived fron myrrh, and I love that. Merrill is a school in my state, and Merrell is a shoe company, and I HATE it when people ask me "Merrell? Like the shoe?" or "You were named after a middle school?" I get mad that that they would think my parents would name me after that. People also spell my name wrong ALL the time. I get things like Merrill, Merill, Meryl, ect, but I don't mind THAT much. What I do mind is if they think I'm saying Merrilyn or Murriel when I introduce myself. Although though there are many obstacles to get through with this name, I wouldn't trade it for the world.

So pretty. When I think of this name I think of a pretty, loving, and kind girl. If I had a daughter this is what I might name her.
My real name is actually Meryl, and I love it. I love my parents for giving it to me. People tend to see me as exotic because of it, and I am just a typical American mutt!
For some apparent reason, to me, the name Meryl is a lot prettier than Muriel. I think it is a lot easier to pronounce, and just seems more feminine than Muriel.
