The association with the meaning "blackbird" may come from the Dutch word for blackbird - Merel, which is also a name.
I could have SWORN that Meryl meant/could also mean "black bird" - I'm assuming as a feminine variation of Merle. See also: http://www.behindthename.com/name/merle
This is actually the Welsh spelling, it's not an English name except for people of Welsh extraction. Baby books define it the same way you have done for MUIRGHEAL, so I imagine it's the Welsh version of the Irish name.
