Never heard of this, but it sounds very unpleasant.

I love this name, mostly for the meaning of "blackbird." The other names that share this meaning are too odd sounding for my taste or in the case of "Merlin" the meaning is obscured by the famous bearer. "Merle" however, has a nice ring to it and also in a small way reminds me of merpeople too, thanks to the first three letters and the name's pronunciation.
