In Spain (with the z=th pronunciation) Mercedes is a very popular name, but now it's kind of dated. It's more of a "mom name", if you will. In the 19th century there was a Queen Mercedes who lived a beautiful and very sad love story with the king as she died at 18. I remember watching the cheesy movie as a child and being so enthralled that I named my favorite doll Mercedes and I decided this would be the name of my daughter one day :) Btw, the nickname is Merche (MEHR-cheh)
