Also used in Spanish, as Merarí, and Portuguese. It is primarily used as a feminine name in Latin America (both Spanish-speaking countries and Brazil). Masculine usage in that part of the world, though uncommon, is not unheard of.
I don't know the reason why, but Merari is somewhat common as a woman's name in Hispanophone America. It is not used in Spain.

This name started off as a male name but more and more parents are naming their little girls with this name. All of the people I know with this name have been female.
